The 'Arch of Khusru' was the name given to the enormous vaulted arch that comprised
a part of the imperial palace of the Sassanid dynasty at Ctesiphon, after the city was captured by the Arab Caliphate, the palace was ransacked and left a shell, the palace was temporarily used as a mosque.

@;Colossus
@PEDIAIMPROVE41
Each terrain sqaure in the city radius produces an extra trade arrow.
It was the emperor Claudius who decided to create a new port by developing a lagoon situated three kilometres to the north of Ostia. Two breakwaters delimited a forty-eight hectre stretch of water, controlled by a gigantic lighthouse rivalling that of Alexandria. But this new port did not fulfil all its expectations, and the last development came with Trajan, who ordered another basin to be constructed, between 100-112 BC, that worked with that of Claudius. Reliable estimates show that the complex could accommodate almost three hundred and fifty boats on its quays at the same time.

@;Lighthouse
@PEDIAIMPROVE42
All River boats can sail the seas without fear! Other ships have movement rate increased by one.
The famous light house (Pharos), consructed during the early years of the Ptolomaic dynasty in the late 4th century BC, was still standing during the 4th century AD.

@;Great Library
@PEDIAIMPROVE43
Civilization receives any civilization advance
already discovered by two other civilizations.
In 133 B.C. the kingdom of Pergamum and its city was granted to the Romans by the Attalid Kings. After that the city lived through a Golden Age when it became an important trade center and gave itself a brand-new status: many new buildings such as the Celcius Library Complex were consructed. During the coming of Christianity with the arriving of Saint John with the Virgin Mary and the preaching of Saint Paul Ephesus became an important centre where Christians, Jews and pagans were to share their views. It was in that period that the Cave of the Seven Sleepers and the Church of Saint John were built.

@;Oracle
@PEDIAIMPROVE44

The Acropolis predated the era of Perikles, but it was through his embellishments, such as the Temple of Athena Nika, that we assosciate it with today.

@;Great Wall
@PEDIAIMPROVE45
Enemy civilizations must offer cease-fire/peace
in negotiations. Combat strength doubled against
barbarians.
Comissioned by Hadrian to gaurd the Roman Empire from the apparently great threat posed by the Picts! At every Roman mile was a fort. Surprisingly the Picts were not to be the cause of the falls of the Roman Empire-that can be sited at the Roman government itself, the German refugee crisis from the Huns and finally the extinction of the Roman Empire forever by the Ottomans in 1461 when they conquered the Roman Empire based at the Black Sea port of Trabezond. Did the wall do well?

@;Sun Tzu's War Academy
@PEDIAIMPROVE46
All new ground units produced gain Veteran status.
Any unit which wins a combat gains Veteran status.
The Baths were comissioned by M. Aurelius Antoninus (Caracalla)around 211-217AD. It was the largest bath complex Rome ever had. The building was set in an enclosure covering about 130,000 square meters with room for almost 1,600 bathers. A lot of the wealthy Romans had their own baths so it was mainly a place where the middle class went.

@;King Richard's Crusade
@PEDIAIMPROVE47
Every square in the city's radius produces an extra
resource "shield".
Marcus Aurelius reigned 163-180AD and was the last of the Five Good Emperors of the Antonine Age.
Stationed on the upper Danube to fight the Marcomanni, enlisting the Sarmatian horsemen into the Roman army at the same time-sending some to Britannia (from which came the Sword in the Stone emblem of 'King Arthur'-originally a Sarmatian emblem).
Whether he was poisoned by rivals or his own vain son is open to speculation though some accounts put his death down to the Plague that was brought back to Europe from Asia after the campaigns against the Parthians. His statue in Rome survived due to it being taken for that of Constantine the 'Great Christian Emperor'. Now a fibre glass copy stands in its place.

@;Marco Polo's Embassy
@PEDIAIMPROVE48
You receive a free embassy with every rival Civilization (so
your intelligence report will always be complete and you will

The only Emperor to abdicate voluntarily, Diocletian comissioned a vast Villa to be made for him at Salona. Gaurded by a stout wall it also contained his mausoleum. Although for many centuries almost completely filled with refuse, most of the substructure is well preserved, giving us evidence as to the original shape and disposition of the rooms above.

@;Michelangelo's Chapel
@PEDIAIMPROVE49
Counts as a Cathedral in each of your cities.
Built where St. Peter was Crucified upside down, the original church was was designed in the shape of a Greek Cross.

@;Copernicus' Observatory
@PEDIAIMPROVE50
Increases science output of city by 50%%.
5 years before the offical foundation of his New Rome, Constantine had to bring order to the new Church beureucracy. Arius of Alexandria had been propagating the idea that Jesus was not divine at all in nature.
The Patriarch of Alexandria complained to Constantine and a council was held in Nicea to judge Arius. 300+ Bishopes attended, mostly from the Orient, though the Bishop of Rome sent two representatives and Hosius of Corduba in Hispania presided. The results were that 'The Son was of the same substance as the Father- Arius was condemned.

@;Magellan's Expedition
@PEDIAIMPROVE51
Movement rate of all ships is increased by two.
Detroyed by Rome in 146BC, and later rebuilt by Rome in 29BC, Carthage grew to become a great Civitas again. Its harbour had a unique design with the rectangular section serving commercial needs and the circular section, which was closer to the Civitas, served military needs. It has silted up into a small lake in recent times.

@:Shakespeare's Theatre
@PEDIAIMPROVE52
All unhappy citizens in city are content.
The biggest and most disgusting device ever made by man, the Flavian amphitheatre, nick-named the 'Colosseum' after the nearby Colossus of Nero (Which shows how popular Nero was still in peoples minds) was opened in the year 80 AD with a hundred days of 'games'. At capacity it could seat 50,000 spectators on four levels. The last gladiator battles were around 405 AD, but wild animal fights lasted until around 550 AD.

@;Da Vinci's Workshop
@PEDIAIMPROVE53
Whenever one of your units becomes obsolete because of a new
technology you have discovered, it is immediately replaced
by an equivalent modern unit.
Zoroaster, said to have been born in the 6th centuryBC, came from the region of Azerbaijan in modern Iran. He reformed the Persian religon into a dualistic universal view with Ahura Mazda (Good) doing constant battle against Ahriman (Bad). During the Persian revival under the Sassanid dynasty Azerbaijan became a vast pilgrim area. The Parsis, descended from Persian refugees after the Arab conquest of Iran in the 7th century AD, maintain the doctrine that you sould have 'Good words, Good thoughts and Good deeds'.

@;J.S. Bach's Cathedral
@PEDIAIMPROVE54
Decreases unhappy citizens on same continent by 2 per city.
A temple to all gods, founded by Agrippa in 27BC, Hadrian remodelled it with a new circular structure and an enormous dome. It survives today.

@;Isaac Newton's College
@PEDIAIMPROVE55
Doubles science output of city.
In Athens, which was by now a mere provincial town, a Neoplatonic centre still flourished. In a time when classical civilisation was in decline, the Athenian academy returned to a stricter philosophical method and scholarship.

@;Adam Smith's Trading Co.
@PEDIAIMPROVE56

The Church in which Constantine was emtombed in, virtually all later Emperors would follow suit. Remodelled by Justinian I and Basil I it was the prototype for St. Marks in Venice.

@;Darwin's Voyage
@PEDIAIMPROVE57
Two free civilization advances.
Said to have been built at the same time as the great 'pyramid'-though now found to be much older, its face was originally that of a Lion and when the climate changed and sands buried most of it leaving the eroded face poking out it was later recarved into the face of an important tribal leader of the region. Said to have an underground vault.

@;The Statue of Liberty
@PEDIAIMPROVE58
Eliminates the period of unrest between governments.
Also allows any form of government to be chosen, even if
the proper advance has not been discovered.
In the center of the new Forum he built, Constantine ordered
a Column built and a statue to be placed on top, within both
column and statue were ancient relics.

@;The Eiffel Tower
@PEDIAIMPROVE59
This colossal statue was set up to impose the presence of the new Western Dyarch on the population of Rome. It reflects the changing attitude towards Imperial Power as lip service to Republican form gave way to divinely appointed autocracy.

@;Women's Suffrage
@PEDIAIMPROVE60
Acts as a Dungeon in every city.
The monument built to commenerate the creation of the Tetrarchy, a system where-by the Augustus would give his throne to his Kaisar (the correct pronouncaition of Caesar)-in order of succession. Diocletian did not want dynastic succesion, unfortunatley this is precisley what happened with the advent of Constantine. The monument was stolen by the Venetians and is now cobbled into the structure of St. Marks, Venice, bar the foot which was recently discovered in Istanbul.

@PEDIAIMPROVE65
Counts as a Philosophy School in every one of your cities; effectively
doubles your science output.
Built in the 3rd century BC in the Greek style the ruins of the huge palace and baths, next to the re-built temple, are very impressive. The baths were warmed by heated air which passed trough ceramic pipes laid under the floor. In the semi circular part of the anteroom, a section of the mosaic floor has remained intact. A story from Greek mythology was taken for a design and was laid out in stones of 15 colors. There is an inscription in Greek which never fails to mystify visitors. It says: "We worked without remuneration".

The construction of the Hippodrome of Nea Roma allegedly began already in the time of the emperor Septimios Severos after 196. It was finished by Constantine the Great and probably inaugurated together with the city in 330.

@title=Civilization: Governments
The form of government you choose for your civilization will
affect the way resources are distributed in your cities, the
rate at which your citizens can produce and sustain new units
and city improvements, and the extent to which your citizens
have a say in the way you govern them.
^
Some forms of government, such as Despotism, Monarchy, and
later Communism and Fundamentalism, allow you to expand
rapidly, to produce and sustain large numbers of military
units, and to control your affairs completely.
^
Democracy and the Republic, on the other hand, give your
citizens the freedom to produce vast amounts of trade, which
increases your wealth and knowledge rapidly. On the other
hand, your citizens may grow unhappy when you send military
units out of your cities; also, your Senate may try to
interfere in your conduct of foreign affairs.
^
To change your civilization's government, you must have a
Revolution--select "Revolution" from the Kingdom Menu. This
will entail a brief period of Anarchy.

@PEDIAGOVT0
@width=600
@title=Civilization Government: Dukedom
Dukedom represents a state not sufficiently organised to boast
a proper Monarchy of some sort. Dukes take power when your
kingdom's line of succession fails, or when you decide to
reform your Court. After a few turns of Dukedom, you will
be able to reconstitute your Court.
^
Dukedom is similar to Feudal Monarchy, except that the corruption
rate is even higher due to the weaker allegance of its citizens.
Also, no taxes are collected during rule by a Duke, and no
knowledge is pursued.

@PEDIAGOVT1
@width=600
@title=Civilization Government: Despotism
^UNIT SUPPORT
Each unit above the city size costs one shield per turn.
Settlers eat one food per turn.
^
^HAPPINESS
Up to three military units in each city will institute
"martial law", converting an unhappy citizen into a content
citizen.
^
^CORRUPTION AND WASTE
Despotism has a HIGH rate of corruption and waste. The
level of corruption in a particular city is based on its
distance from your capital.
^
^SPECIAL
Under Despotism, none of the science/tax/luxury rates may
be set higher than 60%%. ALSO, ANY SQUARE WHICH WOULD ORDINARILY
PRODUCE THREE OR MORE OF A RESOURCE (FOOD, SHIELDS, TRADE) PRODUCES
ONE LESS.
^
^HINTS
Because of Despotism's high rate of corruption, it is almost
always an inferior form of government. Try to switch to a
Monarchy as soon as possible.

@PEDIAGOVT2
@width=600
@title=Civilization Government: Monarchy
^UNIT SUPPORT
Each unit beyond the third costs one shield per turn.
Settlers eat one food per turn.
^
^HAPPINESS
Up to three military units in each city will institute
"martial law", converting an unhappy citizen into a content
citizen.
^
^CORRUPTION AND WASTE
Monarchy has a MODERATE rate of corruption and waste. The
level of corruption in a particular city is based on its
distance from your capital.
^
^SPECIAL
Under a Monarchy, none of the science/tax/luxury rates may
be set higher than 70%%.
^
^HINTS
Monarchy is an excellent form of government for a young
civilization.

@PEDIAGOVT3
@width=600
@title=Civilization Government: Communism
^UNIT SUPPORT
Each unit beyond the third costs one shield per turn.
Settlers eat one food per turn.
^
^HAPPINESS
Up to three military units in each city will institute
"martial law", converting *TWO* unhappy citizens into
content citizens (so a total of SIX unhappy citizens can
be suppressed).
^
^CORRUPTION AND WASTE
Under Communism, state control of the economy eliminates
organized crime. Your cities, therefore, experience no
corruption.
^
^SPECIAL
All SPY units produced under Communist governments are
given VETERAN status. Under Communism, none of the
science/tax/luxury rates may be set higher than 80%%.
^
^HINTS
Communism is best for large, far-flung empires which need
to maintain a large military. Use your powerful spies to
steal technology from the capitalist pigs.

@PEDIAGOVT4
@width=600
@title=Civilization Government: Christianity
^UNIT SUPPORT
Can support up to TEN units for free; additional
units cost one shield each. Settlers eat one
food per turn. ONLY Fundamentalisms may produce
FANATIC units.
^
^HAPPINESS
Under Christianity, NO CITIZEN IS EVER UNHAPPY!
^
^CORRUPTION AND WASTE
Fundamentalism has a LOW rate of corruption.
However, Christianity has the special disadvantage that
all SCIENCE is HALVED.
^
^SPECIAL
Improvements which convert unhappy citizens to
content citizens (Churches, etc.)
produce "Donations" equal to the number of citizens they would
otherwise convert. They also require no maintenance.
The diplomatic penalties for "terrorist acts" committed by
your Sappers and Vicars are reduced.
Under Christianity, none of the science/tax/luxury rates may
be set higher than 80%%.
^
^HINTS
Christianity eliminates all happiness problems and provides
an excellent revenue. Scientific research tends to languish.

@PEDIAGOVT5
@width=600
@title=Civilization Government: Republic
^UNIT SUPPORT
Each unit costs one shield per turn. Settlers eat TWO
food per turn. Only the Flemish may form a republic.
^
^HAPPINESS
Each military unit AFTER THE FIRST which is not in a friendly
city or within 3 spaces of a friendly city, causes one citizen
in its home city to become unhappy. The wonder of Regular Wages
improves this situation no end!
^
^CORRUPTION AND WASTE
The Republic has a LOW rate of corruption and waste. The
level of corruption in a particular city is based on its
distance from your principal Court.
^
^SPECIAL
Under a Republic, each square which ordinarily produces at
least one unit of trade produces an extra unit.
None of the science/tax/luxury rates may be set higher
than 80%%.
^
^HINTS
Switching to a Republic can give an astounding boost to your
science and tax revenues, although you'll probably have to
divert some of your trade to luxuries. It becomes more
difficult (and expensive) to keep an army in the field.

@PEDIAGOVT6
@width=600
@title=Civilization Government: Democracy
^UNIT SUPPORT
Each unit costs one shield per turn. Settlers eat TWO
food per turn.
^
^HAPPINESS
Each unit which is not in a friendly
city (or a fortress within 3 spaces of a friendly city)
causes TWO citizens in its home city to become unhappy.
^
^CORRUPTION AND WASTE
Democracies experience NO corruption or waste.
^
^SPECIAL
Under a Democracy, each square which ordinarily produces at
least one unit of trade produces an extra unit.
The units and cities of a Democracy are immune to BRIBERY
of all forms.
The science/tax/luxury rates may be set to any level
desired.
^
^HINTS
Democracies can produce spectacular amounts of revenue and
scientific research. However, because of the severe
happiness restrictions on military units, this form of
government tends to be viable only for large, advanced
civilizations. Increasing your luxuries rate and building
Wonders can help alleviate this problem.
